Kentucky Yoga Initiative’s (KYI) mission is to build healthy and compassionate communities by empowering individuals to ignite change in their lives through the transformative practice of yoga. This is accomplished in three ways: Outreach to underserved populations in Louisville, Lexington, Owensboro and surrounding areas, scholarships for teacher trainings and other yoga-related programs, and a seva center offering yoga at no cost to anyone in the community.

About

Outreach Program

KYI’s outreach program brings yoga to people who may not otherwise be exposed to it.  From halfway homes to community health centers and organizations working with at risk youth, KYI strives to create possibility and empowerment in each person’s life through the physical practice of yoga. Currently, KYI offers an average of 20 outreach classes per week. Each of these classes is offered free of charge to every organization and individual that participates.  Outreach teachers are Yoga Alliance certified instructors and many of them volunteer their time. Scholarships

As KYI’s outreach program has grown, many students have expressed interest in deepening their practice through workshops and teacher trainings.  Kentucky Yoga Initiative has set up a scholarship program so that these individuals may apply for funding to pursue these greater interests.  By helping to fund these students’ growth and development, they are able to give back to their communities, which is the greatest form of empowerment. Seva Center

The Sanskrit word “seva” means service.  An important part of KYI’s mission is to create a studio where classes are offered free of charge.  Donations will be accepted, but not required.  This center will be in an underserved part of the Louisville community but will be open to people from throughout the area.   By offering classes at no cost, our hope is to break down the barriers that make yoga inaccessible to many, and to build a stronger community.
